Biography: Born in Budapest, Hungary in 1888 and died there in 1960. He studied at the Hungarian Academy of Applied Arts and thereafter with Master Gyula Benczur at his school. He later continued his studies in Italy and Germany. He painted in a highly dramatic and realistic manner with broad brushstrokes on various media: canvas, large wall frescoes and glass-windows. His initial compositions were of female figures and nudes, and then religious and biblical themes. His work was often exhibited at the Budapest Art Hall and he was a founder of the National Salon. His work received numerous awards, including in 1927 the Franz Josef Jubilee Prize and in 1934 the Vaszary Prize for “Christ’s Suffering.”
